“They ask thee concerning the Spirit. Say: ‘The Spirit is by command of my Lord. Of knowledge it is only a little that is communicated to you.’” (Qur’an 17:85)
“We have shown you the dust and concealed the wind.” (Rumi)
Our knowledge of the invisible world is wrapped in mystery. In the East it is said that using the mind to gauge the mysterious realms is like using a bamboo stick to measure the depth of the Ocean. Rumi exclaimed, “Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment!”
Sages tell us that there is “traffic and trade in those mysterious realms.” They offer us two pieces of advice:
First, do not be quick to pass judgements about unexpected circumstances that occur in one’s life. We are not privy to the larger story. In times of affliction, be mindful and continue with your prayers and righteous deeds. Know that Spirit has not abandoned you. In good times, remember to express gratitude for your blessings. Gratitude ennobles our soul.
Second, know that to be content and fulfilled in life, we have to work in both visible and invisible worlds. Participate fully in the bazaar of life-getting married, earning a living, raising children, buying and selling, and experiencing the joys and sorrows of earthly life. But do not forget to participate in the invisible realms: silence, prayers, gratitude and other spiritual practices. Rumi reminds us of the benefits of deepening our bond with the invisible realm:
“Flee not the invisible world
It is a place of income
And this visible world
A place of more or less
It’s a place of expenditure.”
