“And whoever puts all his trust in God, He will be enough for him.” (Qur’an 65:3)
“Then, when thou hast taken a decision put thy trust in God. For God loves those who put their trust (in Him).” (Qur’an 3:159)
We human beings are identified by our actions. We act constantly, and most of us believe most of the time, that we are the ones deciding and controlling our actions. We have been taught to be discerning in our actions, set goals, and act with purpose. Those of us who believe in God or Spirit hope that our actions will please our Sustainer and be helpful to ourselves and others. Sincere and discerning action is highly valued by all spiritual traditions.
Yet sometimes we are faced with difficult decisions. We have duties, responsibilities, and possibilities pulling at us from all sides. What shall we do first, how do we prioritize? For many years now I have followed the Sufi principle, “Follow the Light.” I am a person who has taken on many responsibilities and duties in my work life and personal life, and I enjoy thoroughly most everything I do. But the day is only so long, and often I become overwhelmed, thinking there is no way I can possibly accomplish what I need to accomplish on any given day. Those are the days I follow this principle. After performing my spiritual practices first thing in the morning, I look at my long “to do” list and think, “Which of these will lead me into the Light?” Usually it is the ones that involve helping others and being of service to those in need. This is not used as an excuse to avoid other duties. But as I go through my day, I find a way always opens so that I can finish the most important tasks, and also have time for many other tasks as well! I remind myself, “Follow the Light,” so I do not become frantic. Strange things happen, and the way opens up every time. Someone cancels a meeting at work, something complicated gets resolved quickly, whatever it is, the way opens. Yes, I make a plan for myself every day, and this is very important, but then I look for signs. And I know in my heart that Allah has a back-up plan. If something goes awry, I know it will always work out in the end. For “Allah is your Protector and He is the best of helpers.” (Qur’an 3:150) I have also learned to trust that whatever happens is ultimately in my highest interest, even though I may not understand it at the time. This is the kind of trust we are asked to develop; that which follows after thoughtful and discerning action. Take notice and look for signs as you go through your day. You will find that if you “follow the Light” the way will open for you at every turn. Your heart will overflow with gratitude and renewed energy!
