The Source of Abundance — Commentary by A. Helwa

“We have bestowed upon you the source of abundance. So to your Sustainer turn in prayer and sacrifice.” (Qur’an 108:1-2)

“Do not barter away your bond with God for a trifling gain!”  (Qur’an 16:95)

Within the Qur’an resides all the answers to the soul’s questions of how to approach and experience God.  The Qur’an is not just a collection of rules and regulations, but is, as Imam Ali describes, “An ocean whose depth shall not be fathomed; a spring that shall not be exhausted by those who draw from it; Peace for whoever dwells on it; a guidance for whoever follows it; a cure after which there is no malady; a shelter for whoever seeks healing; a light which does not alternate with darkness.”

The Qur’an is a lullaby for the spirit and an alarm for the ego.  While its words are calming to the spirit, bring it into a restful state of peace and contentment, it is a wake-up call for the ego, confronting it with the light of awareness.  It acts like a spiritual flashlight that extinguishes the darkness of moral and spiritual evils.  Just as a seed cannot become a tree until it breaks its shell and lets the light in, we cannot fully be transformed by the Qur’an’s healing power unless we remove the veils that separate our hearts from God.

The words of the Qur’an help to transcribe the spiritual code hidden beneath our physical forms.  The more we saturate ourselves in the ocean of revelation, the more we will be filled with the presence and truth of God.

We are called to read beyond just the reflection of the Qur’an that is contained in a book.  We are called to read the revelation that graces the pages of the outer world and the holy words of God that are hidden in the folds of our inner realm.  Imagine if you saw every ocean wave as a sign of God, every breeze as an ayah, every person as a surah, and every moment as an opportunity to know God through the creation He spoke into existence.”
